High Speed Interconnects has recently announced the capability to engineer, extrude, and terminate twinaxial cables capable of exceeding today’s high-performance, server signal processing speeds.
Predictions estimate that these speeds will soon exceed 40 GBPS, taxing hardware and wireless infrastructure alike. HSI’s customized twinaxial cable routinely meets this challenge by handling speeds of up to 140 GBPS, while controlling for insertion losses of less than 0.8 dB per foot at 12 GHz. This is in sharp contrast with standardized one foot twinaxial cables, capable of just 25 GBPS transfers with insertion losses of up to 1 dB.
Custom twinaxial cable assemblies from HSI are available in 24-40 AWG and in 16 mils (0.4mm) to 50 mils (1mm) pitch configurations. They have a tunable impedance range of +/- 0.5 ohm for 85 and 100 ohm designs, and come with precise skews matched down to 2 pico seconds per foot. In addition to power and signal combinations, these shielded twisted pairs also come as impedance pairs for differential signals. Utilizing its proprietary VP90™ expanded PTFE (ePTFE) membranes and films, HSI is also able to deliver exceptionally low dielectric constants of less than 1.3.
The demand for faster and smaller servers is omnipresent. Until now, the cable has been overlooked for improvements as part of the high-speed data trafficking equation; typical emphases are placed on transmission functions or signal processor optimization. However, next-generation servers will need all the help they can get, especially from the coaxial cable. HSI offers very low minimum quantities, in-house, direct-to-board termination services, as well as turnkey delivery of assemblies with a choice of differential, PCle, MICTOR, Goldfinger, and LVDS connectors.
